Major
Global Issues Synopsis
As reported by the UN
Water
use is growing over twice the rate that population is growing.
70% of water is used for agriculture. Worldwide, half of all wetlands
have been lost, and more than 20% of the 10,000 known freshwater
species are extinct or threatened. By 2025, nearly half the world's
population will experience water shortages, and it is projected
that wars will increasingly be fought over water. |

The
Earth Charter
We stand at a critical moment in Earth's history, a time when humanity
must choose its future. As the world becomes increasingly interdependent
and fragile, the future at once holds great peril and great promise.
To move forward we must recognize that in the midst of a magnificent
diversity of cultures and life forms we are one human family and
one Earth community with a common destiny. |

Choose
Hope and Change the World
David Krieger
Never before in human history has the danger to our survival been
greater. Today we live in a world in which nations are pitted against
nations, in which wars are commonplace, in which overwhelmingly
the victims of wars are civilians, and in which terrorists strike
out at innocent civilians. All of this must change if we are to
survive, if we are to flourish, and if we are to realize our full
potential as human beings. |

Toward
a Sustainable Future
Kofi Annan
Archaeological
discoveries of recent decades suggest that even great civilizations,
such as the Sumerians and the Mayans, met devastation at least
in part by failing to live in harmony with the natural environment.
We, too, have tempted fate for most of the past two hundred years,
fueled by breakthroughs in science and technology and the belief
that natural limits to human well being had been conquered. Climate
change is a prime example of this... |

D Haddock
Yes,
let's continue our efforts to reform our government, most
especially with campaign finance reform. But, with revolutionary
new tools, we are capable of redefining democracy at a critical
moment. Let us not be shy about it for time is short. We stand
for love and fairness in the world. That is not gentle work, nor
is it painless or bloodless, as so many people around the world
know. |

Understanding Mass Denial
Vinit Allen
How on earth did we get into this mess?? And even more importantly,
how do we get out of it? An examination of the psychology involved
may prove crucial to ensuring that the earth is restored to being
a healthy place for humans and other species, and indeed, to
ensuring our very survival. |
