Overview:
This section covers the basic global situation in terms of
environ- mental degradation and resource depletion; how these
issues affect us here in the US; existing and potential models
of sustainability; and strategies for moving toward sustainable
systems, both in terms of individual and organizational campaigns.
Learn about our precious global ecosystems, how long we have
to turn things around and how that can done. What's the fast
track to renewable energy and how can everyone be given access?
There are some surprises. How does all of this affect us
in our local neighborhoods? The unseen connections...

Overview:
This section addresses global inequities in wealth and resources,
including access to water, food, wages and education;
what forces are keeping this in place; and what action
needs to be taken to achieve a just and equitable world.
What
campaigns are effective at actually moving us toward
a world where everyone's basic needs can be met? Experts
on the panel will examine leading edge strategies.What
is a "just and healthy society" and how do
we get there? There are examples from the past and present
of enlightened cultures: another world is indeed possible.

This section examines the trends and effects of globalization;
what drives it; what are viable alternative models that
are sustainable and equitable, both actual and potential;
and what it will take to put these new models in place.
Globalization has its own rules which prioritize movement
of capital, but policies that prioritize ethics, sharing
the wealth and sustainable lifestyles can steer it in a life-supportive
direction. Hear from brilliant minds who have mapped out
alternative economic structures that are actually working
where they've been applied.

a dreamteam of experts. They will engage and challenge
each other in exploring the tough questions: Where
do we go from here? and How do we get there?

So what are we going to do about all this?
This section covers individual action to create a sustainable
lifestyle; key collective sustainability campaigns for maximum
impact; breakout sessions for further information and getting
involved; and creation of local neighborhood Action Teams
to sustain the commitment to making a difference with our
actions.
Here
you'll choose the area that interests you and see how
you can make your contribution be powerful and long-term
and have the tools to streamline your life for sustainability.
Join with top leaders in strategic activism, and be a
part of the most effective organized campaigns. You will
feel the power and support of the larger team working
nationally and internationally with us.

brief announcement of current projects
and campaigns for sustainability and
how to get involved
BREAKOUT SESSIONS:
Environment – An
overview of the campaigns and actions
that will have maximum effectiveness
for protecting and restoring the biosphere.
Also covering campaigns supporting the
transition to renewable energy sources (organized
by The Ecology Center)
Social
Justice – Programs
and campaigns to get involved in that
support human rights in the most urgent
arenas (organized by Global Exchange)
Economies/Commerce – A
further dissection of globalization,
its drivers and effects, and viable alternative
economic models that are sustainable
and beneficial (organized by the International
Forum on Globalization)
Educators – A
look at how to integrate the issues covered
in the Symposium into currently existing
curricula for high schools and colleges
(organized by Project Spera)
The UN – An
exploration of how the UN could be used
as a primary coordinating body in addressing
the world's critical issues, and a look
at the needed reforms to strengthen it
(organized by the United Nations Association)
Action
Teams:
Small groups of 6-8 participants from local community regions
will form for a guided process
to create an optional on-going support for the commitment
to taking action – both
in personal lifestyle choices and in taking part in sustainability
campaigns. The teams will be guided in setting up a plan
for regular phone check-ins and/or meetings to support new
actions and engagements, and be asked to make a minimum commitment
to work together for six weeks. (Organized by SmartSoul Path
to Sustainability.)
